According to The Economist, citing sources close to the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin interpreted the CIA director's visit to Moscow as a sign of Western weakness rather than pressure. As a result, Putin may be preparing for a new escalation driven by his desire to preserve power and his own life. The mission may have produced the opposite of its intended effect.
