Italy to lose 4 million people by 2050 and shrink to 45.8 million by 2080, says ISTAT
Italy's national statistics agency ISTAT forecasts that the country's population will fall by 4 million to 55 million by 2050. By 2080, the number of residents is projected to drop further to 45.8 million. The figures point to a deepening demographic crisis in one of the European Union's largest member states.
