Canada Refuses U.S. Demand to Weaken French Language Protections
Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly declared that protecting the French language and the rights of French-speaking Canadians is a matter of national sovereignty, and Canada will not yield to U.S. pressure on the issue. Washington had demanded reduced French-language protections as part of trade negotiations. Canada withdrew from the talks partly because of these demands.
