Snow blankets the Atacama Desert in record coverage captured by NASA satellites

In August 2026 snow covered an unusually large portion of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, and was captured by NASA satellites. Similar episodes were recorded in 2011 and 2025, but this event was significantly larger in scale. The observations helped scientists explain why such a rare phenomenon occurs.
