US sidelines popular Machado in Venezuela, backs little-known activist instead
The Trump administration has launched the final phase of its three-step Venezuela plan — stabilisation, reconstruction and democratic elections — but caused controversy by sidelining hugely popular opposition figure María Corina Machado in favour of a little-known activist. Brian Naranjo, a former deputy US ambassador to Venezuela, said the choice shocked him. Venezuelans have reacted with outrage, with some calling the move worse than capitulation.
