Cable-free quantum internet — photons transmitted 21 km through open air

Scientists successfully transmitted quantum photons over 21 kilometres through open air, without using optical fibre cables. The achievement is a major step toward a wireless quantum internet that could enable completely secure communications. Until now, quantum networks relied on expensive and difficult-to-expand cable infrastructure.
