The 1526 Battle of Mohács ended Hungarian freedom for centuries
On 29 August 1526, Ottoman forces crushed the Hungarian army at the Battle of Mohács on the Danube, killing the young Jagiellonian king Louis II. The defeat cost the Jagiellonians the Hungarian crown and ended centuries of Hungarian independence. Hungary, which had been a regional empire just fifty years earlier, lost its freedom for generations.
