Star orbits Milky Way's centre at 8% the speed of light, nearing record
Astronomers have identified a star that orbits the centre of the Milky Way at up to 56 million miles per hour — about 8% the speed of light — making it the fastest-known star on such an orbit. The star passes extremely close to the supermassive black hole at the galaxy's heart. Studying it could reveal new secrets about the black hole known as Sagittarius A*.
