US extracted $18 bn Meta settlement on teen safety — now Europe wants to go further

Forty-seven US states settled a landmark lawsuit with Meta for $18 billion, requiring the company to limit addictive design features on Instagram and Facebook and tighten age checks for minors over 10 years. Brussels, which has long tried to push Meta on child safety, sees the deal as a win for online safety but an embarrassment for European regulators. The EU now faces pressure to show its tougher tech laws can achieve as much or more.
