Chimpanzees have been throwing rocks at the same trees for over a decade

Chimpanzees in West Africa repeatedly throw rocks at particular trees, building up stone piles that can remain in use for more than a decade. Researchers believe this behaviour may be cultural and could serve as communication, territorial signalling, or something more symbolic. Camera traps and audio recordings are being used to study who throws the stones and how other chimpanzees respond.
