Medieval tunnel network up to 1.5 km long discovered near Miechów

Researchers have discovered an extensive network of medieval tunnels beneath the monastery complex in Miechów, estimated to stretch up to 1.5 km. The Order of the Holy Sepulchre was brought to Miechów in 1163, and the town became a major pilgrimage destination in Poland after Muslims took the Holy Land. Local legends about monks using underground passages have now been confirmed by archaeological investigation.
