Scientists transmit data through air via laser with over 98% fidelity

Scientists from South Africa and France encoded data in the topology of light and transmitted it over a 270-metre free-space laser link on a Johannesburg campus. Despite severe atmospheric distortion, data was recovered with over 98% fidelity under most conditions — without adaptive optics or distortion-correction systems. The result is a significant step toward cable-free optical communications.
