Heatwaves killed at least 35,000 Europeans — over 1,070 in Poland in a single week

This summer's heatwaves caused at least 35,000 excess deaths across Europe. Germany, France and Spain together recorded over 25,000 heat-related fatalities, with Germany alone seeing a record 14,000 deaths between April and August — compared to a typical 2,000. In Poland, EU data show more than 1,070 people died in a single week in late June. Experts warn the true toll is likely far higher, as heat-related deaths often go unrecorded.
