Scientists asked 1,000 volunteers to bury underwear across Switzerland to study soil

More than 1,000 volunteers buried cotton underwear at various sites across Switzerland as part of a scientific study on soil biological activity. The faster the fabric decomposed, the more active the soil microbiome. Gardens showed the fastest decomposition rates while lawns had the slowest, highlighting how land management practices strongly shape underground ecosystems.
