King Harald V of Norway dies aged 89 — son becomes King Haakon VIII

King Harald V of Norway died on Friday at the age of 89. Harald spent his childhood in exile in the United States during the Nazi occupation of Norway, and later defied royal convention by marrying his school sweetheart rather than a European noblewoman. He has been succeeded by his son, who now reigns as King Haakon VIII.
