Extreme rainfall in Japan: 361 mm in 24 hours, floods and mudslides in Ishikawa and Toyama

Moisture from the Sea of Japan brought relentless heavy rain to Ishikawa and Toyama prefectures on Thursday. In Himi, Toyama, 361.5 mm fell in 24 hours — equivalent to half London's and Paris's average annual rainfall. Rivers burst their banks, triggering flash floods and mudslides that damaged and destroyed buildings. Separately, convective storms swept western Europe, with a tornado reported in France.
