Haakon VIII becomes Norway's new king after the death of Harald V

Following the death of King Harald V, his son Crown Prince Haakon has automatically acceded to the Norwegian throne, taking the regnal name Haakon VIII. The 53-year-old monarch became king at the moment of his father's death, in accordance with succession rules.
