Webb telescope finds gas giants must form fast before protoplanetary disc gas disperses

A study of 72 protoplanetary discs published in The Astronomical Journal found that gas needed to form giant planets is dispersed by jets, magnetic winds and high-energy radiation before young planets can accumulate it. The James Webb Space Telescope allowed researchers to track these processes with new precision. The findings suggest gas giants must form relatively quickly or lose their building material entirely.
