Pentagon presses NATO allies to prove they are taking the lead on European defence

The US Department of Defense, as part of a defence policy review, is pressing NATO allies to demonstrate concretely that they are taking the lead in defending Europe. Washington signals it intends to refocus its own resources on security challenges elsewhere. European members of the Alliance are expected to show real actions and plans, not merely declarations of higher spending.
