H5N1 bird flu kills dolphin in Australia; researchers evacuated from Macquarie Island

A dolphin has died from H5N1 bird flu in South Australia, becoming the second native mammal species known to have contracted the virus. Separately, the Australian government is withdrawing 24 expeditioners from the Macquarie Island research station to protect them from the psychological stress of witnessing potential mass seal deaths from H5N1 during the upcoming breeding season.
