NASA warns astronaut microbes could survive in Moon's polar craters
NASA has flagged a knowledge gap around the risk of Earth microbes surviving on the Moon, particularly in the deep, shadowed craters near its poles. While space radiation and extreme temperatures typically kill hitchhiking microorganisms, the lunar polar topography may provide shelter from those factors. The warning is especially relevant as crewed lunar missions are being planned.
