James Webb Telescope finds planet formation is a race against time

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers studied 72 young, sun-like stars and found that planet formation is a genuine race against time. The building-block material in protoplanetary disks constantly escapes before planets can fully form, and the window for forming certain planet types closes sooner than previously thought. The study offers new insight into why our own solar system took its current shape around 4.6 billion years ago.
