Piracy off Somalia surged after Iran war disrupted regional shipping
New analysis of IMO data shows piracy incidents off Somalia surged in 2026. The region hosts some of the world's busiest shipping routes, which have been heavily disrupted since the Iran war began on 28 February, affecting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. The combination of diverted shipping and reduced naval presence appears to have created conditions for pirates to operate more freely.
