Climate change has made El Niño nearly 40% stronger, study finds

A new study finds that El Niño events have grown nearly 40% stronger over the past four decades compared to the preindustrial era. Lead author Prof. Julia Cole of the University of Michigan says El Niño strength tracks closely with global temperature rise. Forecasters now expect the 2026–2027 El Niño to be an all-time record event.
