Wildfire smoke is America's fastest-growing environmental health threat

Wildfires raging across Ontario, Canada in mid-July blanketed the US Midwest and East Coast in smoke, with Grand Rapids, Michigan recording an air quality index of 616 — nearly double the previous city record of 350, and far above the 301 threshold for hazardous conditions. Wildfire smoke is linked to heart attacks, asthma attacks, premature births and worsening of chronic lung diseases like COPD. Scientists warn these events will intensify in coming decades as climate change accelerates.
