James Webb surveyed 72 star systems: planets must form within a few million years
Observations from the James Webb Space Telescope covering 72 young star systems suggest that the gas needed to form planets disappears from protoplanetary discs within just a few million years. Without that gas, planet formation may be impossible, defining an extremely narrow window of time for the process. The findings shed new light on the conditions required for planets to form at all.
