Scientists trigger rare altermagnetism in ultrathin ruthenium dioxide film
Scientists have found that ruthenium dioxide, normally a non-magnetic material, can exhibit altermagnetism when thinned to just a few atomic layers and placed under mechanical strain. Altermagnetism is a recently proposed magnetic state with potential applications in advanced electronics. The discovery suggests a new way to engineer magnetic properties in thin-film materials.
