Near-total lunar eclipse visible across the Americas on Thursday night

Residents of North and South America were able to witness a near-total lunar eclipse on Thursday night. At its peak, 96% of the moon's surface was darkened by Earth's shadow, with sunlight scattered by the atmosphere giving it a reddish "blood moon" appearance. Lunar eclipses occur when Earth passes between the sun and the moon.
