Yayoi Kusama, the Japanese artist celebrated for her polka-dot paintings, phallic sculptures and public performances, has died at the age of 97. Her work caused a stir in New York City and Europe during the 1960s. Kusama was one of the most significant figures in pop art and 20th-century avant-garde art.
