Desktop CPU shipments drop over 20% as AMD closes in on Intel with nearly 35% market share

Global CPU shipments declined in the second quarter year-on-year, with desktop processor volumes falling more than 20%, according to Mercury Research. The drop is linked to weaker demand for high-end gaming PCs and higher memory and GPU prices rather than seasonal trends. AMD continued to gain market share despite the downturn, capturing nearly 35% of the desktop segment and taking share from Intel across almost every tracked product category. Mobile CPU shipments bucked the trend as Intel closed its capacity gap.
