Scientists melt diamond to crack the mystery of diamond rain inside ice giants
Physicists at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory have for the first time replicated the conditions inside Neptune and Uranus, confirming that diamonds literally rain through the interiors of these ice giants at extreme pressure and temperature. The findings, published in Nature Physics, resolve a 20-year-old scientific mystery. The same physics behind diamond rain could also help scientists triple fusion energy output.
