NASA pilots chased the Moon's shadow over Europe to study the Sun's corona

During the total solar eclipse of 12 August over Europe, NASA Johnson Space Center pilots flew the high-altitude WB-57F research aircraft from Ellington Field in Houston to Iceland. From there they flew through the path of totality to capture data on the Sun's corona — the outer atmosphere that remains mysteriously hotter than the solar surface.
