Seven stages of a meteorite's journey through the atmosphere — from first flash to silent fall

Researchers from SETI and NASA have identified seven distinct stages a space rock goes through as it falls through Earth's atmosphere before landing as a meteorite. The journey begins with an initial flash high above the planet and ends with the quiet descent of dark, non-glowing fragments. Each phase involves different physical processes, including extreme heating, fragmentation and deceleration.
