Al-Sharaa scores abroad but Syria remains troubled at home
Analyst Rob Geist Pinfold revisits his 2025 argument that Western sanctions relief would positively engage post-Assad Syria, now that relief has materialised and the US removed Syria from its terrorism-sponsors list. He concludes that while President Ahmed al-Sharaa has made diplomatic gains abroad, serious domestic security and governance problems persist. The March massacres demonstrated that economic relief alone cannot resolve Syria's structural challenges.
