Scientists run two genetic codes simultaneously in a single bacterial cell
Researchers have achieved a landmark in synthetic biology by operating two separate genetic codes simultaneously inside a single bacterial cell. Previously, altering a cell's genetic code required re-engineering every gene in the genome — an enormous undertaking. The new method sidesteps that obstacle entirely, allowing new proteins with novel amino acids to be produced without disrupting the existing code all other cellular proteins depend on.
