Critical zone processes curb alkalinity export from volcanic watersheds
A study of natural volcanic watersheds shows that critical zone processes — spanning soil to river — significantly attenuate alkalinity fluxes before they reach the ocean. The observations track reactive pathways through the complete system and reveal limiting mechanisms at each stage. The findings have implications for assessments of enhanced basalt weathering as a carbon dioxide removal strategy.
