Tidal tomography detects thermal anomaly deep in Mars's mantle

Analysis of tracking data from Mars orbiters has revealed time-variable gravity field behaviour that maps the structure beneath the Martian crustal dichotomy. The data indicate that a thermal anomaly of 200–400°C is preserved in the present-day mantle beneath the southern highlands. The finding offers new insight into Mars's interior structure and geological evolution.
