Tasmania approves 288MW AI datacentre despite local opposition

George Town council in Tasmania voted 6-1 to approve Australian developer Firmus's plans to build a 288MW AI datacentre at Long Reach, north of Launceston, but councillors admitted they did so reluctantly despite strong community opposition. The decision came the day after Prime Minister Albanese secured a national datacentre standards agreement with states and territories.
