X Corp. sends cease-and-desist letters to XCancel and Nitter, both go offline

X Corp. issued cease-and-desist letters on 24 August to XCancel and Nitter, two unofficial tools for browsing Twitter/X content without an account. Both services have suspended operations and are seeking legal advice. Nitter had been running for seven years and XCancel for two years; both were popular among privacy-conscious users who wanted to view X content without logging in.
