US pushes to extend UN arms embargo to all of Sudan

The United States urged the UN Security Council to expand the long-standing Darfur arms embargo to cover all of Sudan, warning that the country's brutal conflict risks spreading to the wider region. The current embargo is set to expire on 12 September 2026 without a new agreement. Russia, which holds a veto on the Security Council, signalled opposition to any measures targeting the Sudanese army.
