Malaria mutation is undermining the main first-line drug treatment
New research reveals that a genetic mutation in the malaria parasite is making it increasingly resistant to artemisinin, the drug considered the first line of defence against the disease. The mutation helps drug-resistant strains spread more easily, threatening to undermine decades of progress in fighting malaria globally. Scientists warn that alternative treatments must be urgently developed.
