The Sun is going through a magnetic mid-life crisis, scientists find

A discovery made by German astronomer Prof. Erika Böhm-Vitense in 2007 set off two decades of research into why the Sun did not fit into established categories of stellar magnetic activity. Scientists now understand that middle-aged stars like the Sun undergo a magnetic crisis in which their large-scale magnetic fields weaken. Dr Travis Metcalfe of White Dwarf Research Corporation says all stars behave similarly — astronomers simply did not previously understand how stellar rotation and magnetism evolve over time.
