1959 nuclear meltdown at Santa Susana still causing health problems nearby
A new study found elevated rates of autoimmune and endocrine disorders among people living within 5 miles (8 km) of the Santa Susana Field Laboratory in California, where a partial nuclear meltdown occurred in 1959. The findings suggest that contamination from the defunct nuclear site continues to harm the health of nearby residents decades later. The site has never been fully remediated.
