IBM connects cryogenic modules in one environment, targeting 1,000 qubits by 2027

IBM joined two cryogenic modules into a single environment at its Poughkeepsie facility, cooling the combined system to below 15 millikelvin — close to absolute zero. The new enclosure offers up to twelve times more wiring area and shorter interconnects between modules. IBM plans to install Nighthawk chips this year, reach 1,000 programmable qubits by 2027, and achieve fault tolerance by 2029 with its IBM Quantum Starling system.
