Using AI chatbots to spot fake news makes people worse at it after four weeks

A study by Pattie Maes and colleagues at the MIT Media Lab found that participants using AI chatbots were initially 21% more accurate at identifying fake news, but after four weeks became 15% worse at doing so without AI assistance compared to their baseline. The effect has been called an "AI dependency paradox," mirroring patterns observed in medicine and other fields. Notably, around a quarter of participants falsely believed their skills had improved.
