MIT and WHOI develop sonar-camera system to see through murky underwater sediment
MIT researcher Amy Phung and her advisor Richard Camilli of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution have developed a system that allows underwater vehicles to navigate through sediment-clouded water. The technique combines sonar — which works equally well in murky and clear water — with a French-developed image-matching algorithm to enable real-time mapping of the seafloor. The system allows a vehicle to safely approach objects for camera imaging without waiting for sediment clouds to settle.
