Astronomers find way to identify massive stars that gained mass from binary companions

Most massive stars exist in binary pairs, and astronomers estimate around 70% of them have gained mass from their companion stars. Until now, there was no way to determine which individual stars had undergone this process. Researchers have found that the surface chemistry of a star reveals its history, with mass-accreting stars showing distinctive chemical signatures.
