Eight-year-old Louisiana girl dies from brain-eating amoeba after lake swim

Eight-year-old Lillian Smart of Louisiana died on Sunday, August 22 — one day after her birthday — after being infected with a rare brain-eating amoeba. She is believed to have contracted Naegleria fowleri while swimming in Lake Claiborne in northern Louisiana. Infection with the parasite is almost always fatal.
