New SLEEPWALKER malware hides as ESET agent and waits for a custom activation signal

Security researcher Dominik Reichel discovered malware called SLEEPWALKER, disguised as an ESET security agent, which contains no malicious code until activated by a specially crafted network signal. It behaves like a sleeper agent — making no connections to a command server and performing no typical spying activity until it receives the right command. Researchers believe it is likely a nation-state project targeting specific victims; no active campaigns have been confirmed yet.
