China's 2,000-year-old bright red rock art may owe its colour to blood

A new study offers clues about how the Luoyue people created rock paintings in what is now southern China. The murals have retained their vivid red colour for nearly 2,000 years despite exposure to rain, heat, wind and humidity. Researchers suggest the secret behind the pigment's durability may be blood used as an ingredient in the paint.
